Watch Out for A/C Repair Scams

The excruciatingly hot summers in Las Vegas require an efficient air conditioning system. If you experience any problems with your air conditioner, you should call an expert right away. During the summer, most companies will likely increase their repair prices. Are you really getting what you paid for? Not every company will scam you for your money, but there are some businesses that might be charging you for unnecessary repairs. Jeff Rossen from the Today Show set up hidden cameras to reveal the dishonesty of some air conditioning companies. They had three expert technicians check out the unit, and all reported that the unit was in perfect working condition. The president of a top A/C company displayed how breaking a single wire can shut the entire unit down. He explained that he would typically charge less than $200 for the fix, and if other technicians charged more they would be lying and ripping off the customer. Testing Technician’s Honesty The team wired the house with hidden cameras, and had a woman pose as the homeowner. She called six different A/C companies to fix the broken wire, hoping to hear estimates below $200. The first technician found the broken wire, but wanted to charge the woman nearly $400 for the replacement part. However, the replacement part was not necessary, and the technician was trying to scam her. Rossen confronted the technician about his dishonesty, and he left without a comment. The second technician was able to detect and fix the problem within minutes. However, he claimed that the unit was leaking combustible fluid, so he had to replace a certain...

Preventing Common Plumbing Problems

When it comes to plumbing, most people don’t know the difference between a soil pipe and a scald guard. Many plumbing problems require the services of a trained professional due to the level of expertise needed to fix all the pipes and tubes that make up modern plumbing systems. Plumbing related issues can occur at any time, making life much more difficult until these problems are solved. Because plumbing problems can be so difficult to solve, here are some tips for preventing common plumbing related issues. Clogged Drains A clogged drain can back up your entire plumbing system, causing a number of problems. One simple way to prevent clogged drains is to take extra caution in what you and your family puts down the drain. Garbage disposals can get clogged easily, so it is smart to get in the habit of only putting things down the kitchen sink that won’t back up the disposal. Another thing that can be done to prevent clogged drains is using drain cleaning products on a regular basis. The regular use of liquid drain cleaners can keep your pipes clean and put an end to clogged drains once and for all. No Hot Water Not having hot water in your home can make life much more difficult, and significantly decreases the quality of living in your house. While some solutions for bringing back hot water to your home are simple fixes, the majority of the problems related to a lack of warm water requires significant work. As a rule of thumb, water heaters tend to last 12-15 years. If your water heater is getting...

Tips for Hiding your Outdoor A/C Unit

Living in Las Vegas, the air conditioner is everyone’s favorite appliance. However, if you have an outdoor unit, it can clash with your outside decor. Fortunately, there are many ways you can hide your air conditioning unit and still have your yard look good. Before you just put your air conditioner in a box to hide, keep in mind how an A/C unit works. The machine needs to breathe to keep it working efficiently. Your air conditioner works hard to keep your house cool, which makes it generate a lot of heat. The metal casing on the outside of the air conditioning unit is perforated to keep it from overheating, so don’t forget this when you are designing anything around it. Hiding Your Air Conditioner Because your air conditioner works best when it’s not overheating, it’s a smart idea to keep it in a shady area. This will keep the machine running efficiently, ultimately saving more energy. A shady spot will also prevent your A/C unit from malfunctioning. The best spot to put your air conditioning unit is on the side of your house, where the least amount of sun can shine down on it. If your house doesn’t produce a lot of shade during the hot, summer months, consider building a structure over the machine. When creating the structure, keep in mind the need for ventilation. If you have a lot of gardening supplies, you can even turn the structure into a shed. This will not only hide your air conditioning unit, but also keep your tools out of sight. Fencing in the air conditioning unit is the...
