Your Broken HVAC May Be Your Fault

Even though heating and cooling units are arguably the most important part of your home, it’s surprising how often they’re neglected. While it’s usually not intentional, the neglect of your HVAC unit is what causes a majority of the issues we see when on a service call. So, we’ve compiled a quick guide to show a few of the ways we see homeowners kill their own HVAC units. Armed with a little awareness, you can hopefully prevent an unnecessary repair bill in the future.

#1 | Ignored regular maintenance

The easiest way to protect your HVAC is to get it inspected and serviced by a professional at least once a year. Ideally, a heating and cooling unit should get a tune up before winter and before summer to make sure that everything is running up to speed. During these inspections, the technician will clean your outdoor unit and inspect all the parts inside your home. This inexpensive bi-annual inspection will save you a ton of money in the long run by catching costly repairs before they’ve gone too far.

#2 | Ignoring filter changes

Your air filters should be changed every three months at the very least. Ideally, you’ll change your filters once a month because the air here in Las Vegas is so dry and dusty. Further more, air conditioning units run harder here than they do in many areas of the country because they battle triple digit temperatures for a majority of the summer. Just this one behavior extends the life of your unit exponentially.

#3 | Running the A/C too hard

A/C units have to work hard enough in the summer. You can make it’s job a little easier by keeping the temperature setting relatively consistent. Don’t turn your unit off in an effort to conserve energy because the unit ends up working harder to cool your home back down when you’re ready. It also helps to close the blinds during the day and invest in thermal curtains to keep out much of the heat.
