Energy Efficiency and the Impact on Air Quality

Energy efficiency is a hot topic right now. The more energy efficient our homes become, though, the worse the air quality. This is because our homes are become excellent at trapping the air inside. Now, we aren’t saying that you should avoid making your home more energy efficient; quite the contrary. We are saying that as you make your home more energy efficient, you need to be aware of the impact on your air quality and combat it.

One easy way to do this is to use high-quality air filters, and change them regularly. Most air filters that you find in stores of made of fiberglass; these filters are not meant to clean the air; they are meant to trap large particles from flowing into the HVAC system. To combat your air quality problems, invest in a pleated paper filter, or an electrostatic filter.

Electrostatic filters are the best choice for this purpose. As air passes over the strips in the air filter, an electromagnetic charge builds up, and the particles in the air are attracted to—magnetically. While more expensive, you can clean and reuse these filters.
