The Toledo-Lucas County Health Department issued a warning to Ohio residents on Aug. 4: “If your lines have been used since Friday, August 1, 2014 you do not need to flush your system.”
What does this mean? The health and the safety of the community is at risk if residents don’t properly flush their plumbing systems. The following is a step-by-step guide informing residents what to do. Please be sure to complete each step in its entirety before moving on to the next one.
Step 1: Flush ALL hot water taps for 15 minutes
The flushing procedure starts with the hot water taps in your bathrooms. Turn on every hot water fixture in each bathroom, including the sink, shower or bath, then proceed to turn on the hot water fixtures in other rooms of your home. Run the hot water for 15 minutes straight. Do not turn it off any sooner. After that 15 minutes is up, turn off the water for 15 minutes. After every hot water faucet is sufficiently flushed, you may continue to regularly use your hot water.
Step 2: Flush ALL cold water taps for 5 minutes
Once the hot water is complete, you’ll need to move onto the cold water. Open every cold water fixture in your home, then proceed to flush each toilet at least one time. Leave the cold water running for no shorter than 5 minutes. Next, turn off the water for 5 minutes, which will including the water in your refrigerator.
Step 3: Flush ALL remaining water fixtures and appliances
This will include, but is certainly not limited to, ice makers, dishwashers, humidifiers, continuous positive airway pressure, health care devices, water filters, water softeners and reverse osmosis units. Leave them all open for at least 5 minutes.
Please note that if you run a restaurant, you must still follow the same steps, but all surfaces should be cleaned immediately after flushing.
Though this process was laid out for Ohio residents to follow, it won’t hurt for Las Vegas residents to take the same steps. This is a guide to better the care of your plumbing system. It is just as efficient in Las Vegas as it is in Ohio.
