Las Vegas summers can be brutal. We are all tempted to turn the A/C up high, but we do not want to face the energy bill that comes with it. Here are some tips for saving energy this summer, while keeping your home cool:
Set the thermostat as high as you find comfortable. When you leave the house, pop it up to 80-85 degrees. This is cool enough that your pets will be comfortable and your belongings will be safe. Most of us spend more time out of our homes than in them–especially during the day (the hottest times)–so why pay for air conditioning you are not using?
Minimize the use of heat-producing appliances in your home. Use the microwave instead of the oven. Only use your dryer or dishwasher at night. Consider using the no-heat cycle on your dryer and use cold water for your washing cycles.
Keep your blinds closed when the sun is up. This will prevent your house from getting any hotter than it needs to. Even through the window, the sun can raise the temperature of your home. If you really want to enjoy natural sunlight during the days, consider closing the blinds on the east side of your home in the mornings and then switching and closing the blinds on the west side of your home in the evenings.
