Cleaning Your Outdoor Air Conditioner

When you have an outdoor air conditioner unit, it is exposed to nature. This means that dirt, wind, rain and other outdoor elements could dirty or even damage the unit. Just as all home appliances need proper maintenance, the air conditioner unit is no exception. Cleaning it on a regular basis will allow it to produce clean air, reduce energy consumption and ultimately extend its life. Because outdoor air conditioner units are easily accessible, homeowners are able to clean it themselves. The trusted Las Vegas plumber and air conditioning experts have laid out the step-by-step process to ensure you are doing it right.

Step 1: Locate the air conditioner filter. Every unit is slightly different from one another, but it is most likely located along the air conditioner return duct. If the filter is not located is this particular spot, check the access panel on the interior of your home. Once you have spotted it, remove the filter.

Step 2: If you have a reusable filter, you need to wash it, otherwise just replace it with a new one. To wash the filter you’ll want to use a garden hose to spray off the dust and debris.

Step 3: Turn off the power supply to the unit. This means flipping the breaker switch assigned to this area of your home. Typically air conditioner units don’t have an individual power switch.

Step 4: Remove the top panel of the unit so you can get access inside. To remove it, you’ll have to unscrew it. Be sure to set it gently in a safe spot to avoid damaging it.

Step 5: Locate the condenser coils and clean off the dust and debris. This can be done using a vacuum hose. It’s important to note that the coils are very sharp and could easily scratch you. Wear heavy gloves to prevent this from occurring. Be gentle when cleaning around the coils to avoid bending them. If you find that the coils are already bent, they need to be fixed right away or the air won’t flow properly. To repair them, use a fin comb or contact a Las Vegas plumber and air conditioner repair company.

Step 6: Use a wet rag to clean dust and debris from the fan blades.

Step 7: Put the panel back in place and screw on tightly. Turn on the power supply.

You will need the following tools to fulfill this maintenance job:

  • Garden hose
  • Screwdriver
  • Vacuum
  • Rags
  • Gloves
  • Replacement filter (as needed)

Performing this routine maintenance can be very beneficial to your home. Experts recommend that this gets done twice at the beginning of the hot weather season and once more when winter approaches.
