Time to Winterize the Inground Pool Plumbing

While it may not be winter yet, the season is rapidly approaching. It’s best to winterize your pool during the fall so it will be fully prepared come the frigid air. Basically, winterizing your pool plumbing means you’ll be removing water from the pipes to prevent freezing and bursting. If this is your first year dealing with a pool, the plumber Las Vegas relies on will teach you the basics of winterizing.

Equipment

There are certain tools you’ll need to do the job properly. The following is a variety of options that you can use:

  • 5hp wet/dry vac
  • Cyclone blower vac
  • Air compressors

We prefer the Cyclone because it is the strongest. Plug whatever tool you choose into a grounded 110 volt outlet. To avoid blowing the circuit lines, you can plug it into the kitchen outlet.

You will also need:

  • Antifreeze
  • Hose adapter
  • Filter hose
  • Winter plugs

What To Do

First you want to attach the hose adapter and filter hose to the Cyclone. We recommend using either a 3 or 4 inch hose.

Next, you need to remove the pump lid and drain plug. Turn on the blower and set it near the main drain. It only takes a few minutes to properly blow of the drain line. Just know that the Cyclone is the best tool for the job. Some wet/dry vacs won’t properly blow out the drains, especially on really deep pools. If you find yourself having trouble, contact a trusted plumber Las Vegas.

Once you have blown out the drain lines to the best of your ability, we encourage you to add antifreeze. This way, even if you didn’t get every last drop of water, you’ll pool plumbing won’t freeze over.

After the are drained out and filled with antifreeze, you need to plug them back up with specialized winter plugs. These are made of rubber and have the ability to expand if need be. When plugging the lines, be sure the plugs are on very tight. Any possible leaks could cause the pipes to freeze over.
