If you have kids, some of the funniest stories you have to tell about them probably have to do with plumbing—whether it is that time they played in the toilet or that time they tried to help wash the dishes but put dish soap in the dishwasher. While funny in retrospect, if your toilet got clogged or your dishwasher overflowed and the kitchen floor was covered in sudsy water, it was also probably a lot of work. Kids can inadvertently cause a lot of damage to your plumbing, so it is important to teach them the dos and don’ts of plumbing as they grow up.
As early as possible, teach them about the toilet and what not to flush. This includes toys, wipes, Q-tips and diapers, among other things!
When they are old enough to be helping you in the kitchen sink, teach them not to put grease, bones or peels down the drain or the garbage disposal. Teach them to rinse their dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.
When they are old enough to stay home alone, teach them how to turn off the water to the entire house in case of an emergency leak. Teach them how to plunge a toilet and a sink.
