Tips to Inspect Your Furnace This Fall

Even though we Las Vegans heat our homes for only a couple months out of the year, we have to remember to care for them. Because our furnaces are left off for so long, they have a higher risk of developing costly repairs.

Thankfully, with the right preventative measures, you can keep your furnace happy for as long as you’re in your home. Use the following checklist to ensure your furnace keeps your family cold throughout the winter.

Check the ventilation system

Before you really start turning up the heat, make sure your furnace can breath. Inspect the ventilation system for any holes, cracks, or dirty vents that can compromise the effectiveness of your furnace. For this same reason, check to be sure that everything is connected securely.

Check for debris

During your furnace’s off season, lots of dust is sure to have collected around it. There could even be little critters that have built nests in the area. So, check for anything that is too close to your furnace to avoid starting a fire. Clear the area around your furnace of all debris, but especially flammable items.

Check the moving parts

You’re looking for fan belts or pulleys that seem dry, cracked, or loose. If you notice something is off, call a professional in Las Vegas who can effectively repair your heating system. Fan belts and pulleys, if installed incorrectly, can cause you even bigger problems in the future. Save yourself time and money by letting the pros handle it.

Check the controls

Look for connections in the controls and switches that may be loose or damaged. Again, if something looks off, call a professional. Don’t risk unnecessary damage to yourself or your furnace.

Check the carbon monoxide detectors

Carbon monoxide is a dangerous byproduct that’s released when a furnace needs to be repaired or replaced. So, make sure the carbon monoxide detectors in your home have fresh batteries. Just to be on the safe side, test the alarms as well. You want to be sure you can hear them.

If you complete this checklist before you start cranking up the heat, you’ll be happy you did. However, even with the most cautious care, things can still go wrong. And, if you’re like many Las Vegas residents, your experience with the inner workings of furnaces is limited.
