Traveling abroad is about to get a little cooler, as Dubai has innovative plans to become the world’s first air-conditioned city. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) are planning an air conditioned city to become a year-round destination. In the summer, Dubai reaches extraordinary temperatures as high as 122 degrees. Constructing air conditioning throughout the entire city will encourage more tourists to visit during the summer.
A/C for Everyone
The city will be about 48 million square feet around. As part of the new plans, they will also construct climate-controlled streets, the world’s largest indoor theme park and 100 hotels and apartments. The city will also have other facilities including health resorts, theaters, a Celebration Street and a retail network that is expected to stretch over four miles. Overall, the project is going to cost about $7 billion.
The project’s most expensive addition will be the Mall of the World, which will end up becoming the largest mall on the planet. The mall is going to feature a wide range of options for tourists. The most innovative component of the Mall of the World is the Wellness District. Encompassing 3 million square feet, it will provide health care and rejuvenation services. Tourists will even be able to undergo specialized procedures and cosmetic treatments.
A glass dome will be built around the city to keep it cool. It will be able to open during the winter months to allow people to get fresh air, but remain closed during the hot summer months. The vice president of the UAE stated, “This project complements our plans to transform Dubai into a cultural, tourist and economic hub for the two billion people living in the region around us; and we are determined to achieve our vision.”
Dubai’s Significant Growth
The growth of tourism has been steadily increasing, which has called for a need to enhance Dubai’s infrastructure as soon as possible. The UAE is confident in Dubai’s economic strength. They believe that tourism will continue to flourish, so funding the project won’t be a problem.
People inside the dome will only be able to get around using old fashioned street cars. They plan to create a new urbanist retro vibe within the city.
How much energy will a dome that large use? The project is expected to follow specific environmentally friendly guidelines. The dome will be built using state-of-the-art technology that will reduce energy. Overall, the glass dome will operate efficiently with high levels of environmental sustainability. They are expecting the project to be finished by the UAE World Expo in 2020.
